Description
The Promate Raven Frameless Scuba Dive Mask is a continuation of the trend toward the frameless mask designs becoming so popular with scuba divers. The exception with the Raven mask is that you get an absolutely great design at a budget price. The lens is molded directly into the soft, silicone skirt in a single molding operation. This mask has the lower tear-drop shape used by many designs to improve the downward visibility. It is narrower at the temples for a good fit, but widens again at the eyebrow to provide improved vision when glancing up. The skirt of the Raven mask is extremely soft and the mask has molded ridges at the top and bottom from an improved grip when doffing and donning. The strap attachment is molded directly to the mask skirt, providing more comfort and a better fit. The listing comes with plastic box to protect your mask. The clear case and lid are great for storage or travel and keep it safe from the bumps and bangs of transporting to protect your scuba/snorkeling investment.

This snorkeling mask is amazing.I used these at three different beaches, swimming with them for 4 to 6 hours each time. The field of view is perfect, and you can see everything crystal clear. I did not use an actual anti-fog product with it this time as I did not receive one in time, but just spit worked fine to prevent fogging. The strap clips on the side made this an absolute pleasure to put on and take off, compared to the standard need of pulling it behind your head. I was able to easily un-clip it when I wanted to remove it and just as easily put the mask on my face and clip the strap on to put it back on.I swam in water depths up to around 15 feet deep with these and had very few leak issues. Three or four times total on the trip I had not aligned it properly and ended up with a small amount of water in the mask, but when this occurred it just went into the nose section, and I was able to easily drain it just raising the mask a little and letting it run out.I carried shells and live crabs around in the mask, and got sand all over it many times, including young daughters dropping it in the sand and dragging it around a bit. There are zero scratches on the glass, and it looks as pristine as the day I received them in the mail.In addition to the mask they come with a fairly nice case to hold them in. It is a bit more bulky than a clock carrying case would be, but it also offers more protection for them.Once I received these I used the lighter(fire) method to remove the residue that is present on most masks and goggles, to prepare them to not fog up.I cannot recommend this set enough. This is the best set I have ever had. There may be better options, but I certainly do not know of one from my own experience at this price range.I've only had the mask for one week and only used it for one day of diving, but here is what I know so far:The mask skirt is made of a soft rubber and seems to be good quality. Comparable to my Cressi or Oceanways masks. The glass is tempered, one piece and is molded into the rubber frame of the mask. Very simple. Seems sturdy, but time will tell. The connections to the mask strap are simple and do appear a bit 'cheap', regardless they held up well and the detachable snap design is clever, simple and useful. Simple is good with dive gear. Now for the subjective part. Every mask will fit differently on each person's face depending on the shape/size of their face.Dive masks are best tried on in-person to ensure a propert fit. This mask seals very well thanks to the double seal and it fits me okay, but not perfectly... that is because my temples pinch in a bit and I have a pronounced brow and cheek bones. This causes the mask to only have a very light seal on my temples around the side of eyes. So once in a while, I'll get a little leak there. It's no big deal and I still like the mask a lot. Because of the shape of my face I have this problem with MOST MASKS I FIND. This is not a defect in this mask, just an issue with the shape of my face. So if your face is like mine, just keep this in mind. The mask is very low volume, even compared to my oceanways hd mask that is very similar in shape... this one is about half of the volume and is super easy to clear/equalize.The visibility/field of vision is EXCELLENT. The glass is huge (like a windhield! lol) and very close to your eyes which results in almost completely unobstructed vision which is really great, as long as you don't mind a big lens.So overall I give the mask 5 stars for this price point ($25-30).Love the low profile for river snorkeling in current. Minimizes face slap in the Rapids. Black silicon only way to go. Cuts out the glare on sunny days. Strap not bad. Does not pull the hair much like some rubber straps. Lens design is best ever. Provides full range of view. Only thing it was lacking was a purge valve so I added one since the fit was not ideal to my face and did get some small seepage. Beware, this mask fogs more than a Halloween fog machine. Had to get jewelry polish and scrub the heck out of the inside and outside of this lens like 5 times with a Brillo pad to finally end the fogging. Tooth paste won't cut it. The grit not heavy enough. I'm telling you the stuff they use to polish gold that's what you need to take that film off the glass or it will fog for ever. Had so many ruined snorkeling outings over fog until I finally cleaned it with jewelry polish followed up by defogging gel before every use.Update:. I've used this mask for a couple of seasons now and it has held up. It's not the most comfortable mask ever nor best sealing but it's good. It does leave an imprint on your face if worn for a long time. I usually wear it for 3-4 hours at a time.Great quality mask, had a great fit and amazing visibility. Keep in mind every mask will fog if not treated. I did burn this mask, and applied anti fog on it, worked like a charm and did not fog once afterwards, made the dive super enjoyable. Great primary mask or a backup that can easily fold and fit in the BC pocketsIf this fit I'd give it 5 stars but I have a narrow face so it leaks around the sides. The glass also pressed on my forehead. I have never purchased a mask before without first trying it on so I knew I was taking a chance - not the smartest thing to do. Mask is well made, comfortable skirt, and really good peripheral vision. Strap system is very nice for adjusting and removing. No fogging after toothpaste treatment. (As someone else mentioned, a properly treated mask will not fog up - unless you are huffing and puffing way too much.) It did not fit my wife either who has a wider face than I. Can't use it but keeping it for guests since return shipping is ridiculously high. I took another chance and ordered the Cressi F1 frameless which fits. It's not quite as nice feature-wise as this one, but works for me. I have been diving and snorkeling for 30+ years so I felt pretty foolish for purchasing a mask without trying. It really is a matter of luck getting one that fits properly this way.
